Children's Wellness Support in Sydney |
    Sonia Savage, Functional Nutritionist

As a parent, you know when something is not quite right with your child, even when you have been told it is normal, or that they will grow out of it. Whether it is tummy troubles, reflux, eczema, constant colds, fussy eating or mood and behaviour, gentle, evidence-based nutrition can make a real difference to how your child feels and grows. Many of the children I see are the little ones of families I have supported for years. It is a genuine privilege to help them thrive.

    Is This You?

Your baby or child has reflux, tummy pain, constipation or unsettled digestion

Your child gets sick constantly, or is on repeated courses of antibiotics

Eczema, skin issues or food reactions have appeared, and no one has joined the dots

Your child is a very fussy eater, and mealtimes have become a battle

There is autoimmune disease or coeliac in the family, and you want to get ahead of it

You want to give your child the healthiest possible start, from the gut up

Starting Where Health Starts: The Gut

The first two years of life are a critical window for building the microbiome, and that early foundation shapes immunity, mood and lifelong health. Most immune cells and much of the body's serotonin are made in the gut, so supporting a child's gut well is one of the most powerful things we can do.

    Gentle and Practical

I support the microbiome, help with the timing of first foods, and look at how to build positive food habits early, because the foods tied to a child's happiest memories are the ones they will crave as adults. Setting children up for a lifetime of healthy eating isn't just about what's on the plate - it's also how meals happen - sitting together at the table, off devices, sharing conversation and connection. Eating should be a positive family ritual.

    Non-Invasive Where Possible

Where helpful, I use non-invasive genetic testing, a lovely option for children because it avoids blood draws while giving real insight into methylation (B12, folate, choline), lactose and gluten reactivity and coeliac risk. Read alongside the family's history, it helps us work on epigenetics: influencing how those genes actually express. I also use Organic Acids Test (OATS) and Microbiome stool testing where appropriate.

    What Working Together Looks Like

Before we meet, complete a health history for your child and share any relevant results or specialist letters. I review everything beforehand.

    Initial Consultation

A gentle, thorough conversation about your child's history, symptoms and eating, and your concerns as a parent.

    Your Plan

A realistic, family-friendly plan covering food, the microbiome, and practical routines that work in real life, with any supplementation dispensed through Vital.ly.

Testing Where It Changes the Plan

Non-invasive options such as genetics, OATS and microbiome testing, only where it will genuinely help.

    Ongoing Support

Reviews to adjust as your child grows and changes.

I work with all ages, from newborns upwards. Children are welcome as clients in their own right - no need for a parent consultation first.

    Timeframes, Honestly

Children often respond beautifully to the right support, and changes in digestion, skin, immunity or settling can come sooner than you might expect. That said, I will always be honest about what is realistic, and I will refer on where something is outside my scope.

I met Sonia in June 2024, seeking help for my daughter, Frankie, who had been suffering debilitating migraines and associated low mood. With the help of Smart DNA genetics, we identified some potential issues with B12, folate and histamine. Sonia suggested a low-histamine diet and targeted supplementation to support Frankie’s methylation and hormone clearance, resulting in a marked reduction in migraines and improved mood. Since then, Sonia has supported Frankie’s energy (particularly post-EBV) by supporting her thyroid and mitochondrial health. I am so grateful for Sonia’s root cause approach to healing. As a result, Frankie has built a strong foundation for health and now understands the importance of taking an active role in her own wellbeing.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How can nutrition help my child?

Nutrition supports the gut, immune system, growth and mood, which underpin so much of a child's wellbeing. Gentle, evidence-based changes to food, the microbiome and daily routines can help with issues from reflux and eczema to recurrent illness and fussy eating.

Do you do blood tests on children?

Only where genuinely necessary. Wherever possible I use non-invasive options such as genetic testing, OATS or microbiome stool testing which uses a simple cheek swab or saliva sample rather than a blood draw, so your child is not distressed.

My child is a very fussy eater. Can you help?

Yes. Fussy eating often has roots in gut health, nutrient status and early food experiences, as well as normal development. We work on it gently and practically, without turning mealtimes into a battle.

There is autoimmune disease in our family. Can you help us get ahead of it?

Yes, and this is valuable work. Understanding your family history, and where helpful your child's genetics, lets us support their health early with an anti-inflammatory, gut-supportive approach, rather than waiting.

Do you offer online consultations for children?

Yes. I consult online worldwide, with in-person appointments available in Sydney.
